What to look at
The parts of a flyer maker that change the result
Most online flyer makers offer the same broad set of tools. What separates them is how each one handles these six jobs.
- Starting point
Templates, or a blank page
Most flyer makers open on a template gallery sorted by occasion. A template brings a tested layout and type pairing with it; the work is replacing its words and pictures without breaking the balance.
A blank page asks more of the person designing, and suits a business that already has its own colours, fonts and logo to work from.
- Layout
What the eye lands on first
A flyer works when it has one clear entry point: a headline or a picture large enough to be seen before anything else, then the detail in descending order of size.
Good editors make that easy with type presets and alignment guides. It is still the designer who decides what matters most.
- Page setup
Choosing the sheet size first
A5 (148 × 210 mm) and A4 (210 × 297 mm) are the usual sizes outside the US; US letter (8.5 × 11 in) and half letter (5.5 × 8.5 in) are the usual sizes inside it.
Setting the size before the layout saves rearranging everything when a design made for one sheet is resized to another.
- Print file
Bleed, and a file the printer can use
A background that runs to the edge has to extend past it, usually by 3 mm or 1/8 inch, so trimming never leaves a white sliver. Some editors show the bleed area; some leave it to the export settings.
A print-ready PDF with the fonts embedded is the file most print services ask for.
- Output
A home printer or a print service
Printing at home suits a handful of copies on ordinary paper, and most desktop printers cannot reach the very edge of the sheet.
A print service is the usual route for card stock, gloss or matte finishes, full-bleed designs and runs in the hundreds. Several flyer makers can send a design to print without leaving the editor.
- Purpose
An event, or a business
An event flyer is built around a date, a time and a place, and is out of date the day after.
A business flyer is built around an offer and a way to get in touch, and is often kept, so it tends to repeat the look of the business it comes from.
